Middle Distance Final

The 5th day of the competition was surprising for specialists and spectators. In the Middle Distance Final the king Thierry Gueorgiou from France with three European & six World titles unexpectedly remained out of top 10. He took the 11th position (36:38) - 2:29 min. behind the new champion Valentin Novikov from Russia (34:09). The Bulgarian runner Kiril Nikolov for the first time in his career was faster than Gueorgiou and achieved impressive success having reached the 9th position (36:28). Matthias Mertz from Switzerland is the new holder of silver medal (35:30), followed by his compatriot Daniel Hubmann (35:36), who won the bronze medal.

The Suisse delegation has another reason to be proud of their own competitors. The star Simone Niggli won her 1st gold medal in this discipline (33:07) among women. The best runner shared her feeling of happiness to possess 6 golden medals from the European championships including the new one in the Middle Distance race. The competitor in the 2nd place is Signe Soes from Denmark who is almost 2 minutes behind the champion (35:06). Lena Eliasson from Sweden deserved the bronze medal (35:19). Unfortunately, the amazing runner Minna Kauppi from Finland didn't have good luck and couldn't win a medal. She reached the 5th position (35:49).
